Majority of bipolar stepper motors provide four wires to connect to the motor windings. Basic 4-wire stepper motor is shown in above figure. Connections of this type of motors are very straightforward, these motors simply requires connecting the A and A' leads to the their corresponding phase outputs on motor drive.

6-Wire Stepper Motors

A 6-wire stepper motor is quite similar to a 4-wire stepper motor configuration with the added features of a common tap placed between either end of each phases as shown in above figure. These types of motors which has Center taps also know as unipolar motors. This configuration is suitable for application which requires high torque at relatively low speed.

8-Wire Stepper Motors

Motor which offers 8-Wire configurations is used where we need multiple wiring configurations it depends on whether motor's speed or torque is more important. These 8-wire stepper motor can be connected with windings in either parallel or series. Above Figure shows an 8-Wire stepper motor with both windings of each phase connected in series.
