Cables are insulated using various rubber, plastic, and fluoropolymers. However, mostly rubber is used as an insulator due to its property of being a bad conductor of electricity. One of the rubber insulated cables is the Ethylene Propylene Rubber (EPR) Cables. It is a generic term for a wider range of polymers that are based on copolymers of ethylene and propylene. EPR Wire can be customized for different forms of applications. 

EPR Cable is popularly used as an insulated cable due to its high dielectric characteristic. It also displays resistance to ozone and weathering. The thermal range of these CSP Cable is between -55 degrees C to + 150 degrees C. The copper conductor used in this doesn’t have to be thinned to protect it from deteriorating, unlike other naturally occurring rubbers. EPR Cable is softer as compared to cables made from other materials due to the rubber used in it. They can also be replaced by styrene - Butadiene rubber in many applications. 

To improve the physical property and achieve greater hardness these EPR Rubber Cable base compounds can be mixed with polyethylene or polypropylene. The mechanical properties of these EPR Insulated cables include impact, compression, cutting, abrasion, and tearing. One of the drawbacks of these wires is that it does not resist oil. However, it displays resistance to various other chemicals. 

PCP Sheathed Cable is the first synthetic rubber material that was available commercially. They do not become brittle even at a low temperature of -40 degrees C or a high temperature of 120 degrees C. It displays good resistance to swelling along with oils and hydrocarbons. This makes the EPR Power Cable useful in applications such as trailing cables and dredge cables that are used in the oil and gas and mining industry. The PCP cables do not offer good insulation properties hence they are mixed with rubber for EPR Cable Insulation.
